Personal Health Risk Assessment
Exercise
Ten to fifteen years ago 80% of us in Britain felt that we were responsible for ourselves and accountable for our own actions. Today 80% of us feel that someone else is to blame.
With the progression of legislation and our keenness to blame others we appear to have forgotten that we are all responsible for our own health.
We are now officially the most obese nation in Europe with the risk of our children dying before their parents and yet we continue to take no action.
There is no clinical evidence or scientific reason to explain why so many children are becoming obese.
In addition to nutrition, lack of exercise is one of the major underlying causative factors of ill health including musculoskeletal, mental health, cardiac conditions, diabetes, some cancers etc.
- Department of Health states that 6 out of 10 men and 7 out of 10 women aged 16-74 years do not do enough physical exercise to benefit their health
- Physical inactivity doubles the risk of coronary heart disease and triples the risk of stroke
- British Heart Foundation suggests 70% of UK adults do not exercise enough and physical inactivity is the most common risk factor for Britain's biggest killer, coronary heart disease (CHD) leading to 110,000 deaths a year
- Stress and Musculoskeletal disorders are now the commonest reported causes of sickness absence costing employers £11 billion per year
A few useful tips include:
- Take regular exercise five times a week for 30 minutes or more
- Walking, cycling, running, swimming are all better than going to the gym
- Getting slightly out of breath is good but you should still be able to talk, although it should be in broken phrases.
- Resistance training is the best way to improve strength and endurance of muscles and is very beneficial to weight loss
- Resistance training also strengthens the skeletal system reducing the risks of developing a degenerative skeletal disease i.e. osteoarthritis.
