Very few organisations are compliant in this area due to difficulties in understanding how to assess psychological hazards. Most Line Managers and Health and Safety Officers do not understand how to measure and manage the problem. For example:

Do managers understand the variations in psychological hazards and how they affect different people in different ways at different times?
Do they understand the correlation between work-related stress and personal problems?
Do they know how to manage the short, medium and long-term issues which may be identified?
Do they understand the concept of work-relatedness so that they may help defend any EL claim?

Many organisations fail to use the appropriate validated tools for assessing musculoskeletal and mental health risks, mostly due to lack of training of those that manage health and safety risks. As these two conditions are often responsible for 80% of ill health within an organisation, correctly identifying and preventing ill health and injury in this area is extremely important.

Examples of general occupational psychological risks include:

Aggressive customers/clients
Abusive/Under the influence of Alcohol customers/colleagues
Bullying Management style
Potential and actual suicide attempts
Working alone, especially at night
Shift work
Potential Terrorist attacks
Job insecurity/organisational change

However each individual may have other risk factors dependent on age, gender and personality.
