Traditionally undertaken for noise, respiratory sensitisers, Fork Lift Truck (FLT) drivers, Night Workers etc., and usually to comply with Health and Safety legislation or best practice guidelines. In many organisations these risks are actually quite small as many will have appropriate controls in place. However certain industries such as Construction, Distribution and certain Production sites have far higher risks which require medical surveillance.
Musculoskeletal and mental health risks are those which often are not identified until a problem occurs. Screening for such problems is not easy and often the underlying causative factors of both of these problems may be associated with lifestyle including diet and exercise.
A proactive approach to Health Surveillance from a best practise perspective can include a range of lifestyle assessments, including the identification of occupational and non-occupational physical and mental risks. These are voluntary but should be encouraged as part of a healthy culture within an organisation.
