Case Studies
Case Study 1 - Musculoskeletal problem, at risk of becoming a chronic pain problem, successfully addressed using the Biopsychosocial model
- Male employee, who travels thousands of miles per month. had a car accident 3 months prior to being referred to HRM.
- He appeared to be getting worse, complaining of musculoskeletal problems that had not resolved despite intensive input from various therapists. Unfortunately, as is often the case, he was given so many different messages from the various health professionals he encountered that he had become confused, despairing of recovery and very anxious about the future.
- A Complex Case Manager, qualified in Human Givens Therapy, and trained in understanding the Biopsychosocial model, carried out an assessment and gave him positive messages and factual information; She used a combination of Pain Management theory, Cognitive Behavioural principles and the Human Givens therapeutic approach, to undo the previous disastrous encounters.
- He benefited immediately, and at the end of the session agreed to a rapid return to work, supported by a phased programme of reconditioning to normal work duties and normal lifestyle activities, avoiding the medical model normally followed by health professionals.
- This case was a resounding success and HRM's cutting edge and evidence-based approach was gratefully welcomed by both the employee and his employer.
Case Study 2 - Warehouse Operative
- Employee abusing alcohol
- Assaulted wife and father
- Had been employed for 20 years
- Had attempted suicide and marriage problems
- Counselling had been offered previously but had failed (not surprisingly as this would not have been appropriate treatment)
- Case referred to Healthcare RM who assessed him using validated assessment tools and referred him for appropriate treatment
- After 10 sessions he had stopped drinking, regained his confidence and had his life back under control
- Employer was happy as this avoided dismissal, reduced absence and was a moral success amongst workforce.
Case Study 3 - Drayman
- Employee absent for 2 years following an alleged accident at work - whilst on customers premises
- Employee aged 48 and requested Incapacity Pension
- Referred to Healthcare RM who assessed case and referred employee to an "expert" Musculoskeletal Specialist
- Result - Specialist confirmed that there was very little wrong with the employee and that he could return to work on a phased return to work programme
- Healthcare RM then designed a gradual return to work plan
- Employee reached full normal duties after 3 months
- Incapacity and EL claim was avoided
Case Study 4 - Warehouse Operative
- Employee referred with stress and depression after 2 months absence
- Employee claiming racial discrimination
- Possible personal and financial problems also present
- Employee was stating he was not fit to work
- GP stated he was only fit for "light" duties - this is common among GPs and many Consultants, who have no knowledge of Occupational health issues
- He returned to work on part time duties
- He then went absent again with musculoskeletal problems
- Case was then referred to Healthcare RM who assessed him and referred him for a physical and psychological assessment
- The assessment resulted in a firm recommendation to the employee that he could return to full duties from both a physical and psychological perspective
- To facilitate this some short term treatment was arranged (physical and psychological)
- Healthcare RM liaised with his Line Manager and together planned a phased return to normal duties
- Employee resumed full normal duties within 6 weeks by following the phased plan
